Not surprisingly (since the only time we see turtles around here is when they come out of the woods to lay eggs in our mulch), our "fellow" turned out to be a lady...a very messy, picky lady. She attempted to dig at least 8 holes in our flower bed before finally parking herself to lay some eggs, which is when we discovered her, so we were too late to relocate her and the damage was already done. The last photo is an action shot of a gigantic snapping turtle laying an egg just in case you've ever wondered what that looks like. After the egg came out, she used that back leg to tuck it in under the dirt into the hole with tons of its friends. If you'd like a pet snapping turtle, come visit us in 2-3 months and you can take your pick of the litter.
